Police warn of local scams

More scams are targeting Valley locals and police are warning people to be vigilant.

One local woman fell victim to a panhandler scam in Palm Springs and posted her experience on on Facebook. She was approached by a man claiming his car had broken down. The man told her he needed money for road side assistance. After she gave him money she saw him get in his “broken down” car and drive away. Another person on the thread said they were faced with the same situation.

It’s a scam with potential for serious consequences, if caught by police.

Sergeant Mike Casavan is warning people to be vigilant. He showed KESQ & CBS Local 2’s Lauren Coronado one of the latest scams from his own, personal cell phone. The voice message said, in part, “You will be taken under custody by the local cops as there are four serious allegations being pressed against your name at this moment.” The recorded message left a phone number and asked for a phone call back.

“I didn’t obviously call it back, but the cops are not going to call you and let you know if there’s a warrant for your arrest. We’re not going to give you a heads up that we’re coming to look for you,” Casavan said.

Casavan also says scammers will ask for a victim to act quickly. He advises people to stop, think and access the situation before making any moves.

Locals we spoke to say they try to be cautious and aware of a situation that seems illegitimate.

“The best you can do is be on your guard at all times,” said Jenny Putrino, of Palm Springs.
