Kavanaugh-Ford testimonies trigger survivors of assault

The testimonies from Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and slated Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh have impacted victims of sexual assault locally in Coachella Valley.

Program Director Winnette Brenner at Coachella Valley Sexual Assault Services said in the past two days the center’s hotline has spiked with an influx of calls.

“Today alone we’ve received five calls this morning and that’s just from victims that have been watching the hearing and how much it’s affecting them and bringing up the past for them,” Brenner said.

Like many victims of sexual assault, hearing the testimonies at the nation’s capitol can trigger traumatic memories for survivors but also encourage people to speak out and get help.

Brenner said no matter the outcome of the hearing, the testimony serves as an opportunity to empower victims.

“I would just like victims to continue to take their stand on this in being empowered, utilizing the voices they have…don’t let this take away all the work we’ve done,” she said.
