TRAFFIC ALERT: Freeway construction & collision slowing traffic in Indio

Freeway construction and a collision was backing up traffic eastbound on Interstate 10 in Indio Thursday morning.

Caltrans crews closed the eastbound Jefferson on and off-ramps overnight, and a freeway lane, as they perform concrete repairs just east of the Jefferson Street Interchange.

Eastbound freeway traffic was backed up past Washington Street to the west.

A collision in the back up was reported at 7:12 a.m. eastbound just east of Washington Street. A driver in a gray Honda Civic collided with another Honda sedan. No injuries were reported.

Westbound traffic was not being impacted by the road work.

Take an alternate route to avoid this slowdown if you can.

Caltrans said the work is part of an ongoing pavement replacement program repairing nearly 150 miles throughout the Coachella Valley.

The $17 million, seven-month project began in July and has been beset by problems with collisions in the traffic backup it’s been creating. There were collisions two days of the project’s four days last week. On Thursday, the CHP issued a SigAlert in both directions of the freeway at Washington Street due to numerous collisions in an area where traffic was backed up due to the construction work ahead.

Crews are filling potholes, as well as repaving and resurfacing the roadways “to increase ride quality and extend their lifecycle,” according to Caltrans.

“State Routes 111 and 86 are the main north-south connectors through the southeastern desert region,” Caltrans Director Laurie Berman said. “These routes also link to I-10, one of California’s major trucking corridors. Repairing these highways will improve freight movement and operational
efficiency.”

Funding for the project comes from Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, which set aside $1.8 billion annually for state highway maintenance projects.
