Caltrans changing hours for pavement improvement projects

Caltrans is switching a road improvement project to new work hours to address traffic backup concerns on Interstate 10 through Palm Desert and Indio.

The state agency is replacing and repairing 149 lane miles on Interstate 10, and State Routes 111 and 86 in Riverside County due to the funds from Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

Starting Tuesday, the new work hours are 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. The work week is Sunday night through Friday morning. The previously planned hours saw crews working along the freeway from 10 p.m. to 11 a.m. daily.

The project caused miles-long backup each morning the work took place, and numerous collisions were reported during commuter hours.

The new hours are hoped to alleviate commuter congestion during the continuing project.

The pavement work on I-10 will take place on the eastbound lanes between Jackson and SR 86 until mid-November and then the work will continue on westbound I-10 until the end of the year.

Crews are filling potholes, as well as repaving and resurfacing the roadways “to increase ride quality and extend their lifecycle,” according to Caltrans.

Pre-cast slabs are being installed rather than quick-set concrete. The slabs require a longer period of time to install, however the benefit is longer lasting pavement with fewer repairs,” Caltrans said.

“State Routes 111 and 86 are the main north-south connectors through the southeastern desert region,” Caltrans Director Laurie Berman said. “These routes also link to I-10, one of California’s major trucking corridors. Repairing these highways will improve freight movement and operational efficiency.”

The project is being funded with $17 million dollars from SB 1.
