Community members turn out for Palm Desert fitness event
People in Palm Desert grabbed their running shoes and water bottles for a color run at Civic Center Park Sunday morning.
Lines of people walk and jog as colored powder showers over them with kids excited to get drenched.
“It feels like your just getting into a baking war. Like with flour getting thrown all over yourself,” Alyssa Marron of Coachella, said.
This 2K color run is drawing the whole family to come out and get dusted and fit in a more vibrant way.
“It was really kind of fun and also it did not taste good in your mouth. As you can see her hair is green from the color now,” Leila Estrada of Palm Desert, said.

The run was just one part of the Y Be Fit Palm Desert Challenge, an event in it’s fifth year featuring a health and fitness fair and various races including the winners of the reverse triathlon.
“We had people pushing baby carriages, we had some very old people. We had one guy run the 5K with crutches,” Rob Ballew, CEO of YMCA of the Desert, said
About 1,100 people attended the fair this year including many children getting a first hand look at what exercise can be.
“Fitness can be fun. A healthy lifestyle can be fun,” Ballew said.
Advice some of the young runners agree.
“It’s really important to stay fit because you don’t want to with your back like that, so you really want to stay fit,” Estrada said.
A fitting message that could pay dividends in health.
