Opposing Prop Six campaigns make final push to voters
Supporters of Proposition Six made a final push today in Indio, by giving drivers a chance at free gas. The No on Six campaign crying foul, calling their opponent’s event a “stunt”.
Cars lined up Monday morning hoping to score a chance at free gas, crowding the Arco station on Jefferson street in Indio.
“I was told free gas and I was ready to come over here and line up and get free gas,” Robert White of La Quinta said.
The Yes on Prop Six campaign held a drawing to win one of a thousand $50 gas cards statewide, if people filled out a form pledging support to repeal the gas tax.
“Sacramento politicians kind of circumvented this tax without the vote of the people and so what it does, it raises our gas tax by 12 cents and it continues to go up,” Brandon Jones, a Yes on Six advocate, said.
He also said, the prop would also put a new amendment to the state constitution.
“The Sacramento politicians will not be able to pass another tax like this without it coming to the vote of the people first,” Jones said.
“My car takes premium and we’re struggling to get this car back and forth to work,” White said.
The No on Six campaign says the gas ax provides $5 billion for infrastructure projects, like the Jefferson Street bridge replacement.
“We need to have our roads and our bridges be taken care of and if people vote yes, they’re saying they don’t care about roads, they don’t care about the bridges,” Elle Kurpiewski, political director for the Democratic Headquarters of the Desert, said.
“I don’t like driving on messed up streets. It ruins my tires. I just got it at the dealer. I don’t want to be dealing with that you know,” April Garcia of Indio, said.
The No on Six campaign responded to the gas card drawing saying quote: “It is illegal to offer anything of value for a pledge to vote, and our campaign will be taking legal action to address this desperate stunt. More importantly, voters need to know that Prop 6 is a dangerous measure that eliminates $5 billion in funding for California’s crumbling roads and bridges.”
Ultimately, it will be voters who either make or break the state’s gas tax.
