13 killed, including deputy and suspected bar shooter in Thousand Oaks
13 people have been killed, including a Ventura County Sheriff’s deputy and the suspected shooter following an attack inside a Thousand Oaks bar late Wednesday night.
Sheriff Geoff Dean confirmed the deaths. He said in addition to the 12 victims, around 10 other people were injured in the shooting.
Sheriff Dean identified the shooter as 28 year old Ian David Long. Previous reports say he lived in the area and the weapon was a legally obtained 45 caliber Glock, according to ABC News.
Sheriff Dean said the shooting occurred 11:20 p.m. Wednesday night at the Borderline Bar and Grill. Reports said the shooter opened fire inside the bar.
Sgt. Ron Helus was identified as the deputy killed. Sheriff Dean said he responded to the scene initially and was shot after he entered the building. He died at a hospital early Thursday. Sgt. Helus was a 29 year veteran on the force and was scheduled to retire next year. The sheriff said he told Helus’ wife “he died a hero because he went in to save lives.”
The suspect was later found dead inside the bar, according to authorities. A motive for the shooting remains unknown this morning. Sheriff Dean said they believe Long acted alone and said the only weapon recovered was a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting.
Dean says his department had several previous contacts with the former Marine including a call to his home in April, when deputies found him acting irate and irrationally.
The sheriff says a mental health crisis team was called at that time and concluded that Long did not need to be taken into custody.
Dean says the other prior encounters were a traffic accident and an incident when he was the victim of a battery at a bar.
Authorities and witnesses say the gunman wore dark clothing and didn’t say anything as he fired inside the bar. Hundreds of people fled, some breaking windows and jumping out of second-floor windows to escape.
The shooting occurred during “College Country Night” at the bar. Pepperdine University confirmed some of it’s students were present at the bar at the time of the shooting. There’s no word yet if any students were among the victims.

California Lutheran University canceled classes following the shooting where some of the college’s students were attending a country music dance night as well.
The Cal Lutheran website says the university community is invited to gather Thursday at the school’s chapel. The university is a short drive from the Borderline Bar & Grill.
An emergency hotline was established so that people could locate anyone who was at the bar.
