Legally blind man teaching Folklorico dancing
A legally blind man from San Bernardino isn’t letting his condition stop him from sharing his love of dancing to young kids.
29-year-old Gary Ferrer was diagnosed with meningitis on December 2016 after experiencing severe headaches. He told Carlos Trejo the infection was so bad that he was told he only had 12 days to live. Ferrer survived but lost his eyesight in the process.
After two months in the hospital, Ferrer decided he wanted to share his love for “Baile Folklorico” and started to offer free lessons at St. John’s Episcopal Church in San Bernardino.
“It was a little bit depressing to me but, at the same time, I have too much to do. I have to work hard for the things that I want and this is something that I like to do. I like to dance, it’s a big part of my life, and become a teacher for these kids,” Ferrer said.
The group has performed throughout Southern California at events like the Orange County Fair, Knott’s Berry Farm and the Sturges Theater in San Bernardino. The group will be performing at the Festival of Lights in downtown Riverside on December 17 and January 5.
