Palm Springs turkey trot celebrates holiday
Runners and walkers of all ages came together once again this year for the annual Turkey Trot 5K in downtown Palm Springs.
“Thanksgiving Day is the biggest race day of the year. All throughout the country more people come and run on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year,” said Turkey Trot director Molly Thorpe. “And what’s awesome about being in Palm Springs is not only are there locals and snowbirds, but it’s such a destination place for Thanksgiving. We have people from all over the country and all over the world here today.”
Palm Springs’ race has quite a few bases covered, division wise; according to Thorpe, 1,300 some-odd participants have their choice of division, including the standard running route, the stroller division, and the doggie division, just to name a few.
On the competitive side of things, the training run up can pretty intense.
“I train every day. Swim, bike, and run. I average about 12 miles a week of swimming,” said Lionel Sanders, winner of the men’s race. “10 to 12 hours a week of biking and another 60 to 70 miles a week of running. It’s high intensity. 30 percent or so. very high intensity. “
On the women’s side of things, youth shined bright; 11-year-old Megan Crum came in first for the women’s division.
Whether it’s for fun, competition, or just to make space for more stuffing later in the day, participants can rest easy knowing they ran for a good cause; a portion of the race’s proceeds benefit the Mizell Senior Center’s meals on wheels program.
