Director Alfonso Cuaron to be recognized at Palm Springs Film Festival

Director Alfonso Cuaron will be presented with the Sonny Bono Visionary Award at the 2019 Palm Springs International Film Festival, festival organizers announced today.

The Mexico City native is being recognized for his latest film, “Roma,” which details the lives of a middle-class Mexico City family in the 1970s. In addition to his directing duties, Cuaron was the film’s writer, producer, cinematographer, and editor.

“Alfonso Cuaron’s latest feature, `Roma,’ is a masterful achievement in filmmaking,” festival Chairman Harold Matzner said. “Drawing upon his childhood memories, Cuaron has created an emotionally driven story about a family growing up in 1970s Mexico City.”

Cuaron will be presented with the award at the 30th annual Film Awards Gala, set for Jan. 3 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

Other previously announced award recipients include Glenn Close, who will receive the Icon Award for her performance in “The Wife”; Rami Malek for his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody”; Melissa McCarthy, who will receive the Spotlight Award for her dramatic turn in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”; and the cast and director of “Green Book.”

The festival runs from Jan. 3-14. Click here for tickets.
