Pedestrian killed after being struck by vehicle in Cathedral City

A 50-year-old man is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Cathedral City Monday evening.

According to a news release by the Cathedral City Police Department, the crash was reported at around 7:02 p.m. near the intersection of Ramon Road and Crossley Road. The man was struck by a minivan.

The man was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center for emergency medical treatment while officers remained at the scene and conducted a traffic accident investigation. The man was later pronounced dead in the hospital. His identity will be revealed after next of kin is notified.

Following a preliminary investigation, officers determined that the man was crossing the roadway northbound and was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on Ramon Rd. The pedestrian was not within or near a crosswalk and was not near an intersection.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene for the collision investigation. The news release notes the driver cooperated with police and was not impaired or intoxicated. Officers determined after their preliminary investigation that they were not at fault for the collision.

The news release notes that the department and city have been working to address pedestrian safety in that area. The area has been notorious for numerous pedestrian accidents in the past couple of months. CCPD officials say the department plans on focused enforcement of traffic laws, including jaywalking and unsafe roadway crossing by pedestrians during darkness. The City’s Traffic Engineering Department is also developing signage in English and Spanish to be posted and displayed along Ramon Rd., directing pedestrians to use the signal-controlled crosswalks in the area.

CCPD would like to remind residents to use crosswalks in the area and never assume that motorists see a pedestrian, especially at night.

Officers remain on scene to continue the investigation. Stay with KESQ & CBS Local 2 for updates.
