La Quinta blood bank experiencing critical shortage
A local blood bank that services all Coachella Valley-area hospitals put out an urgent call today for donors, citing a shortage of platelet supplies.
San Bernardino-based LifeStream Blood Bank, which has a donation center in La Quinta, is “critically short of platelets” that are “essential for patients battling cancer and other blood diseases.”
Due to the “brief shelf life” of platelets, the blood’s clotting agent, having “an ongoing supply is critical,” as transfusion to patients must occur within five days of donation, according to LifeStream.
Donors who visit the La Quinta Donor Center today and tomorrow will receive a $10 gas card, according to LifeStream.
The donor center, located at 79215 Corporate Centre Drive, is open from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, and 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. all other days. Appointments can be made by calling (760) 777-8844.
