Student-Athlete of the Week – Lady Lions’ Senior Stars

It was a run to the CIF championship that this Cathedral City girls basketball team will never forget. It was the first in program history and changed the athletic culture around the high school.

But for them it was still not enough.

“We didn’t finish out the season as planned but it’s motivation to work harder and get a ring this year,” said senior Tatiana Witherspoon.

“I think because we made it so far we all know what we are capable of and so now we have our goals set and know what we want,” said senior Dominique Urbina.

“Losing in the finals really motivated us and made us want to work harder and yeah, we made it to state and stuff but once we had that loss it really had us down,” said senior Nina Wallace.

“We’ve been at it since the season ended and we probably took maybe 2-3 weeks off and just got back at it,” said head coach Marques Hill.

So now they’re going to be ring chasing but it’s not the only goal that these three seniors have.

“I want to major in criminal justice and hopefully go into law enforcement,” said Witherspoon.

“I’m really into being a physical therapist maybe a pediatrician just something that’s going to help others,” said Wallace.

“I want to do something psychology so whatever comes in that field that’s what I want to do,” said Urbina.

“They’re all going to be great in life. I can’t wait to see what they do when they go off into college and stuff like that,” said Hill.

And they all have the grades to make that happen but they also have the skill to continue playing basketball at the next level.

“I want to go and play basketball, hopefully Division 1,” said Witherspoon.

“Of course basketball in college, yeah,” said Urbina.

“Yeah, if I have a chance to but if not, it’s not a big deal. Eventually it was going to stop,” said Wallace.
