County gas prices hit 8-month low, drop 37 days in a row

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Riverside County dropped today for the 37th consecutive day, decreasing 1 cent to $3.48, its lowest amount since March 29.

The average price has dropped 32.1 cents over the past 37 days, including 2.2 cents on Thursday, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. It is 8 cents less than one week ago and 28.4 cents lower than one month ago, but 32.7 cents more than one year ago. The average price has risen 40.7 cents since the start of the year.

The streak of dropping prices is the longest since a 45-day streak from Jan. 12-Feb. 25, 2016, when that average also included figures from San Bernardino County.

“Oil prices have dropped by more than 20 percent in the last month, bringing the national average gas price of $2.51 a gallon very close to the same price level as this time last year,” said Jeffrey Spring, the Automobile Club of Southern California’s corporate communications manager.

“Unfortunately, Southern California drivers are still paying nearly 40 cents more per gallon on average than at this time last year. But we could see a few local stations post prices under $3 a gallon for regular unleaded in the next week or two.”
