According to Katie Evans of the Coachella Valley Water District, the flooding was not the result of a levee break. Evans said the wash is flooded because of standard protocols when it rains.
“Everything worked how it was designed to work, says Evans, “The safest place for the water to be is in the wash.”
Evans continued, “When excess water fills the Whitewater Groundwater Replenishment Facility it released into the wash.”
PSPD ask drivers to avoid Indian Canyon in the wash between San Rafael and Garnet Avenue. The road will be closed for an unknown amount of time.
The city of Palm Springs announced VillageFest has been canceled due to high winds and heavy rains being anticipated.
