Valentine’s Day shooting suspect found dead in jail cell

A Desert Hot Springs shooting suspect was found dead in a jail cell over the weekend.

The shooting attack on Valentine’s Day left one man dead and a woman injured.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Anthony Webb, 39, of San Pedro was found unresponsive in his cell at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrietta Saturday at around 4:00 a.m.

Webb was accused of shooting Joseph Slaten, 39, and an unidentified woman in Desert Hot Springs — back in February. Slaten was pronounced dead at the scene, the woman survived but was hospitalized. Webb was also charged with the attempted murder of a man who was at the shooting scene but was not wounded, as well as a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.

Webb was arrested March 1 at his home in the San Pedro area of Los Angeles, with the help of a SWAT team, after holding police at bay for more than three hours.

On November 19, a judge ordered Webb to stand trial on murder and attempted murder charges. He was last in court on December 14 and was being held without bail.

A spokesperson with the Sheriff’s Department said they do not suspect foul play.
