Controversy brews on social media over Cathedral City leaders’ trip to sister-city in Mexico

There is a controversy brewing on social media over the Cathedral City mayor’s upcoming trip to the city’s sister city Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico.

The sister city relationship was started back in 1996. This trip marks the fourth annual visit. The idea behind the trip is to learn about each other’s cultures, good government practices, and economic development in agricultural tourism.

“The commitment between the two cities is strong. We’ve had it for more than 22 years and at the 35th anniversary of our city celebration, the two mayors of the two cities reaffirmed their commitment to continue the relationship in a signed proclamation,” said Chris Parman, communications/events manager for the city.

Josefina Meza, a city employee, says every year, council members meet to approve the money for the trip. This year, however, the money for the trip was donated by private donors.

The trip has not gone over well with some on social media. Some have commented saying there’s no need to send numerous people to Mexico. The commentators argue the money used on that trip could be better utilized elsewhere.

Meza assured residents the money used for the trip is an appropriate amount. City leaders feel the trip is beneficial for both cities.

The sister-city relationship between Cathedral City & Tequila led to the creation of the “Taste of Jalisco” festival, which brings thousands to the city. The 4th annual festival will be held on February 9 at the Cathedral City Festival Lawn near the Civic Center.
