Performer raises $12K for goodwill tour, needs community help for final push

One lucky performer has the opportunity of a lifetime to tour with a theater group that volunteers with underprivileged groups internationally. The only problem? The price tag.

“There’s going to be something that’s going to happen, and I’m going. No matter what. Whether it comes from a donor…I’ve been doing odd jobs,” Alisha Horan-Bates has a $17,450 bill to foot. She was accepted into the Up with People performance group, which travels across the globe. On each stop, performers stay with a host family and volunteer in schools, homeless shelters, and senior homes, completing more than 200 hours of community service.

“I’m a desert rat, was born here, adopted here, did everything else here, so I’m excited to go see the rest of the world,” said Bates.

She received a $3,000 scholarship and has fundraised and saved more than $12,000 on her own over the last six months. Now she’s asking for the community’s help to reach the last $2,400 before Tuesday, or she won’t be able to attend.

Bates said more than anything, it’s a chance for her to give back in memory of her father, who lived a life of service. He died suddenly in April of 2012.

“My world kind of shattered when that happened, and it took a lot for me to get back up on my feet, but I think it’s another reason that I want to do this,” she said.

It’s been Bates, her mother, and their dog Bailey ever since, and even though she knows she’ll miss home, it’s a step she hopes to take for her future and her community.

She has until Tuesday to raise $2,400 or she won’t be able to attend the program. If you are interested in donating to her GoFundMe page , go to this link: https://www.gofundme.com/alishas-journey-to-inspire?fbclid=IwAR1XSThJtFw4onDS9_dVoKvxyKZnmsj03B8SknWtC1eYZI_MPlsaUqpo5o0.
