Desert X brings art to east valley cities
Desert X art installations stretch from Whitewater Preserve to the Salton Sea. News Channel 3’s Kelley Moody took a look at some of the pop up art pieces in the east valley.
Halter by Eric. N. Mack is an actual halter top placed over a boarded up gas station near the Salton Sea. The bright, Missoni fabrics draped over the structure provides a stark contrast to the defunct gas station.
“The site was so important because of the transitional space. Thinking about it being on the line between the train tracks, the valley, and the Salton Sea, it just felt like a special space,” said Mack.

Just five minutes away, you can see Iván Argote’s A Point of View, made up of multiple staircases, providing a unique view of the valley and the Salton Sea.
Each step of the five staircases has a different word, in English and Spanish, that Argote said is poetry or reflections on the space around the installation.
If you don’t mind taking a dirt path to get there, you can also check out Armando Lerma’s Visit Us in the Shape of Clouds. The piece is a large water tower, visiblle from Highway 86, decked out with paintings reflecting the lives and traditions of Mexican farmworkers in Coachella. Lerma is from the area and uses images to showcase the stories of migration and the transitory.
To explore more of the sites of Desert X, you can head to one of the three “Desert X Hubs” throughout the valley.
