Desert Hot Springs’ Desert X exhibit attracts dozens of cars at sunset

Desert X is in full swing — with locals and tourists exploring the valley in search of this year’s artistic exhibits. One exhibit in particular attracted dozens of cars around sunset on Sunday. It’s called “Ghost Palm” and located in Desert Hot Springs at the intersection of San Gorgonio Rd. and Bubbling Wells Rd.

The City Council approved a $25,000 sponsorship deal late last year for Desert X to include the contemporary art exhibition in their city in hopes of bringing tourism and business to the area.

“It’s a great opportunity to come over to Desert Hot Springs. We’ve been seeing all around town. And that’s the great part about getting lost finding these exhibits because you really get to drive around and see what there is and I was actually surprised at how big Desert Hot Springs really is,” said Gail Fischer, a visitor to the “Ghost Palm” exhibit.

The iridescent tree glittering in the valley sun and wind was designed by artist Kathleen Ryan. She describes the structure as a meticulous reconstruction of the largest palm species native to California. The piece is made entirely of steel, plastics and glass.
