Community members honored for their support for developmentally disabled adults
Some of the desert’s largest supporters of Desert Arc and the nonprofit’s work with developmentally disabled adults in the Coachella Valley came together Tuesday for the organization’s 2nd Annual Champions of Change Awards Recognition luncheon.
SA Recycling Organics and Stutz Packing Company were recognized for their in-kind and employment contributions to Desert Arc. The City of Indio was recognized for supporting clients in job opportunities, artists Karen and Tony Barone and Monsignor Howard Lincoln of Sacred Heart Chuch were also honored.
“We don’t realize when we go to eat at restaurants that many of the people serving us got their training at Desert Arc,” said Lincoln. “And they’re all over the valley, and what they do needs to be even more recognized, and events like this I hope gives them even more recognition.”
During the luncheon, several community members and organizations also joined Msgr. Lincoln and pledged financial support for the organization, including Vern Kozlen and Nancy Stone, Eisenhower Health CEO G. Aubrey Serfling, Harold Matzner, Helene Galen, and Jerry Fogelson.
“We have people who care about Desert Arc and we have members of the community coming out here who will spread the word about the good work that we do here,” said Richard Balocco, Desert Arc’s President and CEO.
“We are so glad to see so many returning supporters and thank all who participated. I also want to thank those who helped put this event together,” said Nancy Singer, event chair.
Kyle B. was one of five clients recognized Tuesday as “Clients of the Year.”
“I do landscaping, helping other people,” he said. “I’m good at lawn mowing, a little practice on the weed eater and the blowing, and try my best to greet people and say hello to others.”
After watching a video that played behind him, Kyle unabashedly told of his love for Pokemon and My Little Pony, mentioning that his favorite pony is Fluttershy, “who is kind and loves everything in her heart. I am doing the same thing as well.”
Kyle has now moved out of his father’s home and is independently living with his brother, who he thanked Tuesday.
KESQ’s Brooke Beare served as the mistress of ceremonies at the luncheon, and also serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors.
