President’s Day parade draws crowds in downtown Indio

The President’s Day Parade in Indio hosted the usual phantasmagoria of floats, bands, and equestrian teams today, with Grand Marshals Esai Morales and former Los Angeles Rams tight end David Hill.

“Both Esai and David are true examples of leadership, character, and excellence in their professions,” Riverside County Fourth District Supervisor V. Manuel Perez said. “Their participation as Grand Marshals is especially welcome during these times as our kids face issues such as bullying, violence, and drugs. I thank both Esai and David for coming and for showing their love and support for our communities.”

Esai Morales made his feature film debut in 1983 with “Bad Boys,” but has also won awards for his work on “Mozart in the Jungle.” He co-founded the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts to advance the presence of Latinos in the media and entertainment industries, according to Riverside County Fair Manager Veronica Casper. The NHFA provided scholarships to hundreds of Hispanic students in excess of $1 million.

“I am honored to participate in this parade which is a source of cultural pride in a community that focuses on increasing access for Latinos in the arts and entertainment industries” Morales said.

David Hill played in the NFL for 12 years, including five seasons with the Los Angeles Rams from 1983-87. Hill was integral to the Rams’ postseason success for four consecutive years, Casper said. He currently lives in Riverside and remains an active member of the Rams Legends Community.

The President’s Day Parade is part of the 73rd annual Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival, which began on Feb. 15 and will continue through Feb. 24.
