Locals react to developments in Jussie Smollett attack
The Coachella Valley community is reacting after developments came to light leading police to believe actor Jussie Smollett faked a hate crime.
Chicago Police allege the gay, African American “Empire” actor hired two brothers to help stage the attack against himself in Chicago earlier this month. Prosecutors say the actor misled police and the public.
Many local residents expressed extreme disappointment, confusion and outrage after hearing the turn of events.
Singer and performer Keisha D Sings is an African American entertainer and activist in Coachella Valley. She’s hoping Smollett will come out with an apology so the community can forgive him and begin the healing — not hating — process.
“I feel very very disappointed. Not so much outraged simply because this young man had two paths he could have taken and he decided to take a path that was not so positive,” Sings said.
The performer said an artist should use their platform to inspire and unify people — not divide them.
“For myself, for my singing, if I’m acting on the stage it’s for a purpose to make an impact. It’s to inspire. That’s not an inspirational move on his part,” Sings said.
Smollett was out on bail Thursday night and is facing a felony charge for disorderly conduct.
