Desert Triathlon bringing athletes to La Quinta
Hundreds of athletes gathered in La Quinta Sunday, for the 20th edition of the Desert Triathlon.
It’s a big test of endurance at the Lake Cahuilla Recreational Area with runners working hard.
“It’s one of those things you that you get better at it as you practice it,” Alex Napier, Salton Sea Triathlon Club Board of Directors member, said.
By practicing a sprint triathlon race consisting of a 500 meter swim, followed by a 14 mile bike ride and finishing with a three mile run. Olympic distance is double that amount. Just doing one of the three activities is more than enough for many but not for these athletes.

“It kind of fantastic to try to keep in shape three different ways. You don’t get bored. That’s for sure,” Brian Weissenger, a triathlete from Boise, Idaho, said.
He’s one of hundreds that took part in the triathlon. While the weekend started off gloomy, he’s glad the weather had lightened up.
“Goodness gracious. It’s sunny and gorgeous out here. It could not be better,” Wiessenger said.
Athletes that took part included, our own KESQ chief meteorologist Haley Clawson. Members of the Salton Sea Triathlon Club say, while the event is grueling successfully finishing is an accomplishment itself.
“You can’t be too hard on yourself. You’re mostly here to have a good time and do the best you can with what ever the situation is,” Napier said.
Weissenger says he follows the same attitude.
“It’s really about enjoying the process, enjoying the ability for the body to perform and it’s just having respect for your fellow athletes,” he said.
