Local Democrats talk policies on healthcare and reproductive rights
Valley Democrats hosted a meeting in Rancho Mirage Sunday afternoon at Acqua California Bistro to discus what they call ” Trump’s War on Women’s Rights. ” Members of both ” Democratic Women of the Desert ” and ” Desert Stonewall Democrats ” were present and discussing president Trump’s policies on healthcare and reproductive rights.
The event featured several speakers including Senator Barbara boxer and Darrah Johnson, the CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest.
” Part of the reason why Planned parenthood is participating in this event is to let people know that our doors stay open that our healthcare is going to continue to be received by our patients across the country, ” said Karen Borja , Director of Community Affairs, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest.
Organizers say they wanted to create a forum where women felt supported and could have a conversation about how the president’s policies impact the community.
” We see a lot of issues with healthcare…how Trump’s policies are affecting women and their rights to birth control and rights to abortion and rights to their body…so that’s a big issue for us and it’s a big issue for me, ” said Erin Teran , President, Democratic Women of the Desert.
The event also served to raise money and support for local democratic candidates and for candidates running for office on the state level.
Both men and women attended the meeting. Organizers say it is essential to have conversations on these policies, and they’re also hoping that by having events like this they can create interest and garner support from women and men of all ages.
