$89K worth of meth found hidden in car’s dashboard

El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested a man after allegedly finding methamphetamine hidden in the dashboard of his vehicle.

According to border patrol, a 40-year-old male Mexican citizen driving a dark grey Volkswagen Touareg approached the Highway 86 immigration checkpoint yesterday at around 11:50 a.m. A border patrol canine detection team alerted agents to the vehicle and the vehicle was sent to secondary inspection.

During secondary inspection, agents found several packages hidden inside an aftermarket compartment in the dashboard of the vehicle. The substance inside the packages was determined to be consistent with the characteristics of methamphetamine.

A total of 38.9 pounds of meth was discovered, according to border patrol. The estimated value of the packages is $89,470.

The man, the methamphetamine, and the vehicle were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
