Crews battle Thermal refuge fire

Cal Fire crews are battling a fire in Thermal.

The blaze was reported near the intersection of Pierce Avenue and 69th Avenue around 12:30 p.m. The first responding fire engine reported the incident as a ‘refuge fire’.

A Cal Fire spokesperson later confirmed there is a mulch fire burning in an agricultural area. An eyewitness on scene said the fire was near a home, however, the Cal Fire spokesperson said no structures are threatened.

Crews will remain on scene overnight to ensure the fire does not grow, smoke will be visible in the area throughout the day.

No injuries have been reported. It is unclear at this time what sparked the fire.
