DHSHS student apprehended for bringing loaded gun to campus

A Desert Hot Springs High School student was apprehended by law enforcement this morning for bringing a loaded gun to campus, according to Joan Boiko, Coordinator of Communications and Community Outreach for Palm Spring Unified School District.

The gun was found in the student’s backpack after a staff member requested a health and wellness check because it was suspected that the student was in possession of a vape pen.

According to Boiko, Riverside County’s “Kids with Guns Protocol” was then conducted at the student’s home after the arrested. The student did not brandish the weapon at any time, according to Boiko.

In an email sent out to parents, DHSHS Principal Cota announced that campus safety was never compromised during the incident.

“Police responded to the campus and apprehended the student and weapon without incident,” Cota wrote. ” We are grateful for the diligence of our staff and law enforcement partners in ensuring the safety of our students, which is our number one priority. Thank you for your understanding.”

Desert Hot Springs Police Department Acting Chief Jim Henson said on Monday the investigation into how the student got the gun remains under investigation.
