Deputies investigating Rancho Mirage bank robbery

Deputies and investigators converged on the Wells Fargo Bank at the Rancho Las Palmas Shopping Center Monday morning in Rancho Mirage.

A man with a gun walked into the bank when it opened at 9:00.

“An unknown race male entered the business armed with a possible handgun and demanded cash,” said Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Vasquez.

After leaving the bank, the suspect went across Bob Hope Drive to the “River at Rancho Mirage”, prompting a heavy response from law enforcement.

Roughly 20 police vehicles took up various locations at “The River”, shutting down the complex for about three hours while deputies and officers looked for the suspect.

At various points, their weapons were drawn while they searched.

“Especially in instances like this, we want to remind the public, if you see something suspicious, if you see someone running, or you see a gun, please contact us at 9-1-1, Don’t be afraid to call, especially in instances like this,” said Vasquez.

At one point, what appeared to be a CHP airplane, circled the search area overhead.

Police were stationed at all the entrances and exits at “The River” during the search, while others also looked in areas around “The River”.

The bank was closed during the investigation, and FBI agents were also at the scene.

Throughout the morning, bank customers drove by to find the place closed, expressing concern after learning about what happened.

“All these cops are looking to apprehend this individual as soon as possible,” said Vasquez.

The only information the sheriff’s department is providing on the suspect description is that he is an “adult male” with a “covering” over his face.

No injuries were reported during the holdup.
