Parents keep kids cool as valley braces for triple digit heat
The heat is here!
With many valley schools out for summer, kids and their parents are looking for ways to escape the triple digit temperatures. For some that means getting out to the pool — or spending some time at an ice cold skating rink.
” It is tough,” said Jesus Yvette, a mother who brought her kids to the Palm Desert Aquatic Center. “They get very bored especially as they get a little bit older. When they’re little, you can just give them some crayons or something but when they get a little bit older they say, ‘We’re bored we’re bored..’ So let’s go to the pool!”
11-year-old August Parthus is escaping the heat by going ice skating at Desert Ice Castle in Cathedral City.
“(It’s) burning hot outside so its nice to come inside and be a little colder,” Parthus said.
And as temperatures climb into the triple digits this week, parents are looking for ways to keep their kids cool.
“Today is their first day of summer so I figured why not hit the pool,” said Jesus Yvette, who brought her girls and their friends to the Aquatic Center in Palm Desert to cool down.
“It just keeps them a little sane not being inside all day on their electronics,” Yvette said. “I think you kind of have to when you live out here in the desert.”
Her kids said they were aware of what to watch out for when playing in the heat.
“Drink water and stay hydrated and to put sunscreen everywhere before you go outside in the sun,” said Danykah Molina.
Dr. Timothy Rupp, an emergency room physician at J.F.K. Memorial Hospital, warned of heat exhaustion symptoms.
“Dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, upset stomach, vomiting, headache,” Rupp said. “Enjoy the outdoors, enjoy the pool, enjoy the sun — but do so wisely.”
