A bartender accused of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman after serving her and her mother drinks for several hours at a Palm Springs hotel is expected back in court today.
Alejandro Adan, 29, was charged May 2 with assault with intent to commit rape, rape of an unconscious victim, burglary, sexual penetration of an unconscious victim, sexual penetration with a foreign object, rape of an intoxicated person and petty theft. He is scheduled to make a court appearance for a felony settlement conference at the Larson Justice Center in Indio this morning.
Adan was originally arrested March 3, the night of the alleged assault, but he was released on $110,000 bail. He was re-arrested Thursday, one week after charges were filed, and he remains jailed in lieu of $1 million bail.
According to Palm Springs police, officers responded the night of March 3 to the Rowan Hotel in the 100 block of West Tahquitz Canyon. When they arrived, Adan was found inside a hotel room where the woman was allegedly sexually assaulted, police said.
According to court documents, the alleged victim and her mother were drinking at the hotel’s pool from 1 to 4:30 p.m. March 3, with Adan serving the pair. The mother told the police the bartender was friendly and flirted with her daughter, and he “asked to see them after work,” according to court papers. Because her daughter was intoxicated, the mother took the woman back to her hotel room.
The alleged victim told authorities she took a shower and fell asleep, and her “next memory was awakening in bed with a male lying behind her,” according to the court papers.
Authorities claim in court documents that Adan initially went to the adjoining rooms of the woman and her mother to return the alleged victim’s wallet, which she claimed to have lost earlier in the day. He allegedly returned two more times, and saw the woman’s mother leaving the room on his third visit to go meet her husband in the hotel lobby.
When the woman’s parents returned, they saw their daughter “wrapped in a towel, crying and yelling a man was in her room,” according to court documents.
The parents found Adan in her room “buttoning his shorts and tightening his belt,” according to court records. The father stayed with Adan while the mother called police. While waiting for police, Adan allegedly told the father, “I don’t know, I totally messed up,” court records state.
Adan faces up to life in prison if convicted.
