Power lines downed in Thermal

Power lines were downed in the Thermal area as a result of a storm Tuesday.

Power lines fell on top of a vehicle on Tyler Street and 66th Avenue resulting in the roadway being shut down. A motorist needed to quickly exit their vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP said Tyler Street will be closed from 62nd to 66th for several days.

The vehicle with the power lines on top of it were set to remain in the area overnight as crews acquire specialized equipment to remove it.

There are power lines and/or poles reported down in the following areas according to the CHP:

Tyler St / 66th Ave 68255 Polk St Polk St / 70th Ave Jackson St / 64th Ave Date Palm Ave / 6th St

A spokesperson for the Imperial Irrigation District confirmed about 40 power poles were down as of 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.

The CHP also reported at least five instances of trees being downed and blocking roads in Thermal and Mecca.

Trees were downed in:

Jackson St / 66th Ave 91375 7th St 60th Ave / Van Buren St Johnson St / 66th Ave 62nd Ave / Jackson St

An IID spokesperson said as of 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, there were 1,016 customers without power. Originally, when the storm first hit, there were 4,500 customers in the area without power, according to IID. Cal Fire confirmed widespread power outages in the communities of North Shore, Mecca, Oasis, and Thermal.

The damage assessment is still on going. Currently 1097 energy customers are currently without power. There was no estimate as to when power will be returned to all customers. IID says if you are without power to contact IID and check your breakers.

RivCoReady, Riverside County’s emergency preparedness campaign, announced a shelter was set-up for those without power. The shelter is at the Galilee Center on 66101 Hammond Road in Mecca.
