Hiker rescued after separating from group, going off trail in Joshua Tree

A hiker who broke off from his group and went off trail was rescued on Thursday night in Joshua Tree National Park.

The hiker, who has not been identified, was reported lost at 4:57 p.m. on the 49 Palms Oasis Trail. After the report went in, Joshua Tree Search and Rescue members and park staff mobilized to locate the man.

The man was located at 7:33 p.m. He was released a short time later and did sustain any injuries.

“Dangerously hot temperatures are normal at this time of year. Highs can be well over 100F (38C). Avoid activity during the hot daytime hours. Protect yourself from the sun,” read the National Park Servicd news release on the rescue. “Bring at least two gallons of water per person, and eat salty snacks. Flash floods are a possibility during monsoon season. Travelers should pay close attention to local weather reports for current updates on storm and flash flood warnings.”

49 Palms Oasis Trail is considered ‘moderately strenuous’ and takes approximately two to three hours to hike, with a 300-foot climb each way, according to the National Park Service.
