Apartment fire leaves 8 residents displaced

A two-alarm fire ripped through an apartment at a Palm Desert complex Tuesday evening, leaving a mother and daughter without a home.

It happened just after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the One Quail Place apartment complex in Palm Desert. The family’s pet cat was killed, three firefighters were hurt with heat-related injuries, and several other residents were displaced for the night.

“I looked outside, saw the smoke, made a beeline over here to learn that the fire was actually at my daughter’s apartment,” said Darrell Eisman. “My first thought was for my granddaughter and my daughter … I am very happy they’re okay. I am saddened that now she’s essentially without a home, no clothes.”

Eisman said his daughter and 6-year-old granddaughter weren’t home when their apartment caught fire. He lives in a different apartment across the complex.

“My heart sinks and my mind is just whizzing with, ‘Okay, what’s the next step?’ She’s over there crying, understandably,” Eisman said. “The cat, Alice, beautiful little Siamese cat, is up in cat heaven right now.” Nearly a dozen fire trucks responded in just minutes, evacuating residents and extinguishing the fire quickly.

“If they didn’t get it out right away — if it took them 10-20 minutes to get here — it might’ve engulfed the whole building if they weren’t here real quick,” said Charlie Helsper, who lives One Quail Place.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the home is now unlivable.

Eisman has set up a GoFundMe page – click here to help.
