Cathedral City Elementary celebrates Read Across America Day

Monday marked National Read Across Day which is held each day on Dr. Seuss' birthday.

Cathedral City Elementary School celebrated the day by inviting members from the fire and police departments, along with city and district officials to read to students.

Teachers decorated their classrooms with Dr. Seuss decor and students enjoyed some of his classics.

"My favorite part of today is that we got to read 'Green Eggs and Ham,'" said Dennys Zelaya, a student.

"That's why Dr. Seuss... everybody likes to read it. Because his characters…although they're not human, they're very realistic," Layla Henderson, a student.

Palm Springs Unified School District says they are committed to making sure students enjoy reading.

Authorities say only about one-third of American 4th graders are reading at grade level.
