Report: Coachella could be pushed back to April 2021 at 60% capacity
Billboard Magazine is reporting that Goldenvoice officials are working on possibly scrapping the Coachella Music and Arts Festival entirely this year and returning in either April or October 2021.
According to Billboard, Goldenvoice officials are working to see if the festival will return in April at 60% capacity or make a larger return in October.
Billboard reports that about 40% of tickets for this year's festival have been refunded.
Goldenvoice has not made announcements regarding the future of the music festival. However, Billboards' report follows a similar report by Bloomberg nearly two weeks ago that festival organizers asked artists to play in 2021 instead.
According to the Billboard report, Coachella-promoter AEG is waiting to see how the trajectory of the pandemic before making a final rescheduling decision.
This comes after AEG announced the largest staff cuts in the company's history on Monday. Billboard reports that the company laid off 15% of its workforce, furloughed more than 100 employees, and instituted 20-50% pay cuts.
In an email to staff obtained by Billboard, AEG chief executive Dan Beckerman wrote, "It is clear now that live events with fans will not resume for many months and likely not until sometime in 2021."
No word on how Stagecoach will be affected in all of this.
The festival attracts over 125,000 people to Indio over two weekends. The city currently has the most coronavirus cases in the Coachella Valley with 619.
Last week, Eisenhower Health reported a recent increase in positive coronavirus test results. Lee Rice, hospital spokesperson, wrote that these cases aren't from care facilities like they saw before, these are members of the community.
As of June 9, Riverside County has 9,590 cases, with 5,466 recoveries and 365 deaths.
