One man dead, two children injured in suspected DUI crash in Palm Springs

Update 11/21/22

Police confirmed a man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Police revealed that the victim ran out of gas and was parked on the right shoulder of Highway 111.

The investigation revealed that the suspect, a 39-year-old Beaumont man, made an unsafe turning movement toward the victim, for reasons that remain unknown. The suspect veered to right onto the dirt shoulder. The right of the suspect's vehicle crashed into the rear of the victim's vehicle.

After the collision, the Chevy overturned and landed on its wheels, on the dirt shoulder and the GMC came to rest on its wheels within the dirt shoulder. Both vehicles sustained major damage.

Inside the victim's vehicle was a 45-year-old from Palm Springs, a 12-year-old, and a 10-year-old.

The 45-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The 12-year-old suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The 10-year-old was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center with major injuries.

Police said the suspect fled the scene and was later found at his home in Beaumont. He faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, vehicular manslaughter, and hit and run causing injuries.

He was in custody at the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio. He was released on $95,000 bail on Monday, Nov. 21. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 31.

A man was killed and two children injured after a two-vehicle crash Friday night in Palm Springs.

The crash happened on Highway 111 near Angel Canyon, which is south of the Interstate 10 exit.

California Highway Patrol said a man was driving a 2018 Chevy Silverado and made an unsafe turning movement. The Chevy crashed into the rear of a 2006 GMC Sierra that was parked on the right shoulder and was out of gas. The Chevy then overturned and landed on its wheels in the dirt shoulder, where the GMC came to rest as well.

Both cars had major damage.

The GMC was occupied by a 10-year-old boy, a 12-year-old girl, and a 45-year-old man. The man died at the scene, while the boy suffered major injuries and was airlifted to the hospital. The girl suffered moderate injuries and was also taken to the hospital.

The driver of the Chevy ran away from the scene after the crash and was later found at his home. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, vehicular manslaughter, and hit-and-run causing injuries.

The roadway was cleared by 11:20 p.m. Police told News Channel 3 crew at the scene that the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
