Big rig truck pursuit slows traffic on westbound I-10

California Highway Patrol pursued a big rig truck Sunday night, slowing down I-10 traffic for at least three hours.

CHP vehicles trailed behind the slow-moving big rig and closed down on ramps to prevent more cars from entering the freeway. Westbound traffic was slowed significantly.

The police pursuit started in Los Angeles County and ended up traveling into Coachella Valley.

Viewer video shows a number of CHP vehicles trailing the slow-moving truck on Interstate 10 Sunday night in Palm Desert at Cook Street.

Police say this chase started around 5:30 Sunday night well to the west of us at Highways 60 and 57 near Diamond Bar, where officers saw a possible DUI driver who refused to stop. That chase wound up in the Coachella Valley by 7:00, where police deployed spike strips to deflate the big truck's tires.

Traffic slowed to a crawl behind this spectacle for several hours. The CHP says the truck's driver continued for several miles on the rig's rims before finally stopping around 8:35 p.m. just west of Date Palm Drive in Cathedral City.  That driver was taken into custody.
