Local JW Marriott becomes a ‘Certified Autism Center’
The JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa in Palm Desert is now the first hotel in the valley to become a Certified Autism Center, or a ‘CAC’.
The CAC certification is given by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards.
The certification is earned by businesses and organizations that complete online training sessions designed to help individuals better understand and meet the needs of people with autism and their families.
Visit Greater Palm Springs has been leading the movement to make the Coachella Valley a ‘certified autism destination’.
“Our CEO, Scott White, came to me…I explained that I had sons on the autism spectrum, and that it [autism awareness] was a cause that was special to me…he said, “Hey, I want to talk to you about an autism initiative, to get businesses and organizations throughout the valley certified to be certified autism centers,”” said Josh Heinz, a partnership specialist with Visit Greater Palm Springs.
Heinz introduced the idea of the certification process to the local JW Marriott team. The hotel’s staff is now educated on how to assist and can offer resources to people on the spectrum and their families.
“The moment they arrive at the resort, our goal is to be helpful to them and understand their needs,” said Nusrat Mirza, general manager JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa.
The hotel now provides maps which detail where to find low-sensory indoor and outdoor areas around the property.
Upon arrival, guests may also request a kit that contains sensory bags, weighted blankets, headphones, fidget toys and sound machines.
For Heinz, the goal is to inspire other businesses and organizations around the valley to obtain this certification as well.
“If we become a ‘certified autism destination’, we can tell the world that we want families and individuals on the autism spectrum…we want them to come here and we want to give them positive and memorable experiences,” said Heinz.
