Tracking road conditions ahead of heavier rainfall

A First Alert Weather Alert will remain in effect throughout the day due to widespread rain that may lead to flooding on low-lying roads like North Indian Canyon Drive.

As of this afternoon, the #2 southbound lane on Indian Canyon Drive is closed due to pooling water.

The #2 westbound lane on Vista Chino is also closed through the wash.

If you want to track Interstate 10's motion, we've been using Sigalert to track the speeds, incidents, road closures, and traffic.

Turn on your windshield wipers and wipe those backup cameras as you prepare to drive in this wet weather. "I think the roads are fine. I think it's the people driving on the don't know how to drive and wet weather. George Sheetz thought he'd be the only one running to Costco on this rainy day. But the parking lot was full of cars. Sheetz says he is from up north and is used to rain and other weather events. "But down here, it doesn't seem like speed is an issue," says Sheetz. "So I'm surprised there aren't more accidents with the elderly population down here."

Drivers on the road are asking the community to slow down. Pat Lote shares her tips for driving in these conditions. "Don't push on the brakes too hard, says Lote. "That's how you can end up just sliding off the road or whatever. Just be careful."

As the rain falls, different parts of the valley are experiencing some flooding.

In the Tri Palm Estates in Thousand Palms, residents say every time it rains this happens.

This video was shot Monday of a flooded intersection in Thermal.

In this case, flooded areas might not have road closures; residents say this is when you need to use your judgment. "Just don't go on them," say Lote. "Because if you hit a sinkhole or it's too, you don't notice the depth, then you can run into trouble."

While on the highways, you may experience low visibility with high levels of mist in the air. "It's tough, but you just be careful and take your time," says Sheetz. "Don't be in a hurry."
