Cabazon wildfire at 70% containment after blackening 40 acres near the windmills

Firefighters were working early Wednesday morning to fully contain a 40-acre vegetation fire in the Cabazon area.

Hand crews were coming back down the mountain at the time, and CalFire Division Chief Todd Hopkins said the fire's progression had been stopped at 40 acres.

The fire was reported at around 6:27 PM near Almond Street and Esperanza Avenue.

CAL FIRE confirmed that approximately 40 acres of vegetation were burning at a moderate rate of spread.

There were no evacuation warnings or orders issued.

Heavy smoke was visible in the area at around 6:45 PM.

CAL FIRE had an air tanker and a helicopter that were making drops on the flames.

This is in a different area than a vegetation fire that burned earlier Tuesday afternoon in Cabazon. The wind-driven fire burned 36 acres. As of 7:00 PM, firefighters continued to work to fully contain this blaze.

As of 6:47 AM this Wednesday morning, the fire is at 70% containment.
