Local law enforcement discuss public safety protocols ahead of political events

In the wake of the attempted assassination of former President Trump, questions remain about the security measures taken by the Secret Service and local law enforcement ahead of his campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Over the weekend, News Channel 3 spoke with a local woman who was at the rally and watched former President Trump get shot. You can hear more about her experience here.

As election season gets underway, News Channel 3 reached out to local law enforcement to see how they may be doubling down on their safety strategies at public political events.

The Palm Springs Police Department works directly with California Highway Patrol and the Palm Springs FBI bureau to secure local political events.

PSPD representative Captain Mike Kovaleff says the department is going to harden their security efforts as election season gets underway.

“We are prepared, we will increase staffing, we'll have positions like we always do above, and our drones will utilize additional personnel. The key thing is space, you want to create a safe space for whoever's coming into town, and have layers of protection," said Captain Kovaleff.
