Coroner IDs man killed in crash with tree in Rancho Mirage

Update: 8/16/24

The coroner's office identified the person killed in the crash as Charlie Garcia Rodriguez, 22, of Cathedral City.

One person is dead after their vehicle crashed into a tree Sunday evening in Rancho Mirage.

CAL FIRE officials said the crash was reported at around 6:10 p.m. on Highway 111 and Paxton Drive, west of the Rancho Mirage library.

"Preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling northbound Hwy 111 at a high rate of speed and lost control. The investigation of the collision is ongoing," writes Sergeant Wenndy Brito-Gonzalez, public information officer with the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities confirmed. The person's identity has not been released to the public.

Brito-Gonzalez said the investigation remains ongoing.
