60 animals, including five ‘significantly underweight’ horses, rescued from Cabazon home; one arrested

60 animals were rescued from a home in Cabazon earlier today by the Riverside County Department of Animal Services.

Five horses are a part of that total. All of the horses were described by authorities as underweight, with three of them being "significantly" underweight.

Four dogs, six puppies, and 45 fowl were also taken from the property.

Authorities say they had visited the property twice last month. They observed the malnourished animals and offered to rehome them, but the man who was arrested today declined.

"So we're coming to the property and finding animals with no water – or the water that is on the property is non-potable. It's something that you would not give to your animals," says Lt. Lesley Huennekens, talking about the conditions officers found on the property today.

The man arrested was identified as Rafael Leal. Riverside County Sheriff's deputies assisted with the arrest.

We previously reported ten horses had been rescued from the home, but Animal Services clarified that six horses had been removed by the property owner before they arrived today. They later updated that number to five in a press release.
