MECCA, Calif. (KESQ) -  A vegetation fire that erupted in Thermal charred 17 acres and threatened an abandoned structure before firefighters stopped the forward rate of spread and held containment at 60% today.

The fire was reported shortly after 9 p.m. near Lincoln Street and 70th Avenue. It was intially reported in Mecca, but CAL FIRE later clarified that it was in Thermal.

The agency stated that crews battled a 15-acre vegetation fire that was being hampered by strong winds. Firefighters stopped the blaze at 17 acres a few hours later, with no injuries or evacuations reported.

Crews remained at the scene as of Thursday morning for mop-up work and strengthening the line with resources, officials said.

There was no immediate word on what triggered the blaze.
