Indio police to crack down on intoxicated motorists

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) - A crackdown on drunken and drug-impaired motorists is scheduled tonight by the Indio Police Department.   

The anti-DUI patrols will begin at 6 p.m. Friday and continue until 2 a.m. Saturday, focusing on removing the potential threat of impaired drivers on roadways citywide, as well as reinforcing the importance of safe driving, according to the department.

"Impaired driving is preventable. It's a choice,'' Sgt. Peter Fuentes said. "If you've been drinking or taking drugs ... find a sober driver or alternate transportation."   

Fuentes emphasized that both prescription and over-the-counter medications may cause impairment, along with other substances, such as marijuana.

Drivers were encouraged to read medication labels carefully and choose alternate methods of travel if there is a risk of impaired driving.   

"Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license,'' according to an agency statement.

The Friday night campaign was funded by a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety.
