Sprinkler malfunction damages giant chalk mural of Janet Jackson painted in Palm Springs

A sprinkler malfunction damaged a giant mural of the legendary Janet Jackson that took 14 hours to paint in downtown Palm Springs.

On Thursday, Southern California artist Amanda Harris-Gibbs spent 14 hours painstakingly creating a chalk mural of five-time GRAMMY®️ Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame®️ Inductee Janet Jackson.

The massive 13’ x 13’ chalk mural in front of Kimpton Rowan Hotel was set to reach completion during Thursday’s VillageFest, the popular weekly street fair in the heart of the city.

The mural was in honor of Janet Jackson who recently announced she will kick off her 2024 Together Again tour at Acrisure Arena with special guest Nelly on June 4.

Throughout the day, fans and visitors alike checked in on the progress and watched the talented artist Amanda Harris-Gibbs re-create the 2024 tour artwork, but tragedy struck at 8:55 PM when a nearby sprinkler malfunctioned, pouring water onto the sidewalk. S

Significant parts of the nearly completed artwork were overcome with the water, blurring the chalk and removing the crisp features of the artwork on the left side and bottom. Harris-Gibbs and numerous helpers immediately tried to divert the water. Harris-Gibbs evaluated the ability to perform repairs on the artwork but unfortunately time was not on her side to make the repairs.

While still in a satisfactory condition, the mural will remain throughout the weekend.
