Belarus authorities say German man sentenced to death asked for pardon

Associated Press

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Belarus’ authoritarian leader says he’s considering a plea for pardon from a German citizen who has been sentenced to death on terrorism charges. Belarus’ President Alexander Lukashenko called a meeting Tuesday to discuss the plea from Rico Krieger, who was convicted and sentenced to capital punishment in June. Krieger has been in custody since his arrest in October 2023. Belarusian state media reported that he was accused of staging an explosion at a railway station on orders from Ukrainian special services. Belarus is the only country in Europe to carry out capital punishment, with executions reportedly performed with a shot to the back of the head.
