Independent US Sen. Angus King focusing on future as counting continues in 4-way race

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Independent Sen. Angus King is ahead in his bid for a third term in Maine, but with much of the vote yet to be counted, it was too early to tell whether ranked voting would be needed to decide the four-way race. An extra round of tallies would be required under ranked choice voting if King fails to obtain a majority. That would mean a winner wouldn’t be formally declared for a week. On Wednesday, King said he believed he’d won outright, though The Associated Press had not yet called the race, and looked forward to shaping policy and legislation in Washington. The 80-year-old former governor would be Maine’s oldest senator if he completes a third term.
