BURBANK, Calif. (KESQ) - Seventeen people were taken into custody in Burbank as part of a statewide organized retail theft operation, police announced today.

Los Angeles Organized Retail Crime Association and California Highway Patrol Organized Retail Crime Task Force investigators conducted a joint operation with detectives in a statewide operation known as Summer Blitz between Aug. 11 and 13, according to the Burbank Police Department.

During the operation, detectives worked with loss prevention personnel from retailers including Marshall's, TJ Maxx, Walmart, Target, REI, Nordstrom Rack, Lowe's and ULTA to investigate multiple thefts, police said.

Detectives arrested 17 people on suspicion of misdemeanor and felony theft offenses.

"This enforcement effort reinforces the Burbank Police Department's continued commitment to combating organized retail theft and enhancing public safety," the department said in a statement.

Police said the operations are critical tools to deter repeat offenders and support businesses.
